Water is thrown throughout the month of April, as temperatures peak at this time. The festivities take place over four days-from the 13th of April to the 15th, and sometimes 16th. In the past, people sprinkled water on each other. But today, people throw buckets of water on each other. One of the rituals of the festival was to render respect to the elders by putting water on the hands. The various families will pour water on those, who are to be revered. A container known as khun oh is filled with the fragrances of dried and fresh flowers.
The festival is also celebrated in the nearby Countries of Burma and Laos, and Cambodia. Today the festival only concentrates on throwing water on each and having fun on all the four days. 'Get wet and have fun' is what the Thai people have to say! |
